I didn’t expect to be back so soon, but here we are…
It hasn’t even been a week since the new administration has been sworn in and already we’re living in a weird, dystopian novel.
The Nazi salute has made its public appearance, people are being forced to follow the new president and VP on Instagram (making me want to delete my account forever), hundreds of people have been pardoned for Jan. 6 crimes, Trump is trying to remove birthright citizenship (which is part of our constitution), LGBTQ+ rights are being actively stripped…
The administration has removed important information (including inclusive language) on its White House website, as well as other federal websites including the government website on Reproductive Rights, the administration has ceased all communications with federal health organizations (including the FDA, CDC), and Trump has removed the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO).
I could go on and on, but all this is to say, we’re in trouble.
"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." - Dr. MLK Jr.
This isn’t the time to sit back idly, though I wish it were. This is a critical moment in history. We have to take a stand, join together with our allies, support the organizations (and people) that need us most, and continue to share educational, truthful information with our networks.
It will get worse. There’s no questioning that.
While I believe we must protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our mental well-being, I also believe that we each have a role to play in changing this narrative. Even if you’re overwhelmed, exhausted, or time strapped, you have the power to do something.
Support your local businesses. Delete Twitter. Reach out to loved ones who might be worried/scared for what’s to come. Donate to organizations that are destined to lose funding and support, such as the Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, ACLU, NAACP. Follow reliable, trusted journalists and outlets, such as The Contrarian. Speak up when you encounter injustices. Sign petitions. Save critical information from websites that may be removed.
Most importantly, find ways to connect with others. Building a community is essential, not only to stay sane but to resist what’s to come. The more arms, the stronger the army.
I know it’s a lot. This is a stressful, scary time. But it’s just the beginning… mind your mental health, take care of your loved ones, and buckle up. ♥️
